Andrews Government Shooting Goals for Netballers

Danny Pearson MP today announced funding to develop plans to expand the netball facilities at Riverside Park in Ascot Vale. With new families moving into the area and more locals signing up to play netball, the existing seven multi-use courts are struggling to cope with demand. Following consultation with Netball Victoria and Moonee Valley City Council, the Labor Government is delivering $10,000 to begin planning works. The funding will kick start a concept plan for netball courts at the park, then prepare a design brief and business case for the new courts. The plan will explore options for resurfacing existing courts to competition standard, adding up to nine more courts, and installing competition standard lighting so the courts can be used day and night.

Stopping the East-West Tunnel

Despite widespread community opposition, the Napthine Government pushed ahead and signed a contract to build the East West Tunnel, just weeks before the State Election. This tunnel would have had a disastrous impact on Flemington, Travancore and Ascot Vale. Our community would lose public open space, more cars would clog our streets, the 57 and 59 trams would be slowed down to a crawl and our suburbs would be turned into a building site for the next 10 years. That’s why the Andrews Labor Government will not build the East West Link.

Removing the Buckley Street Level Crossing

Essendon residents are tired of the traffic congestion around Essendon Station as a result of the Buckley Street level crossing. People can lose 15 minutes in peak hour just trying to get across the railway line. The people of Essendon deserve better. Studies show that at many level crossings across Melbourne the boom gates can be down for 50 minutes during the peak period. That’s why I am pleased that an Andrews Labor Government is removing the Buckley Street level crossing. This promise is fully-costed as part of our centrepiece policy to remove the 50 worst level crossings in Melbourne.

Preventing the overdevelopment of the Moonee Valley Racing Club

The former Minister for Planning, and now Opposition Leader, Matthew Guy approved the proposed development of the Moonee Valley Racing Club without a cap on the number of dwellings and unsuitable height limits. Without any checks or balances this development could destroy Moonee Ponds. The Andrews Labor Government is ensuring that Moonee Ponds residents won’t have to put up with a development that destroys our streets and our community. Labor is ensuring that the redevelopment of the racing club is appropriate.

Rebuilding Strathmore Primary School

I have visited Strathmore Primary School on many occasions and I have seen first-hand the appalling condition of the School. In 2010 work was about to start on rebuilding this school. Then the Coalition won the election and cancelled the project. They then ignored Strathmore Primary for four years while the decay worsened, until just a few weeks before the 2014 election campaign. Strathmore kids deserve better. That’s why I am pleased that the Andrews Labor Government will spend $5.7 million to rebuild Strathmore Primary School.
